School Speech Language Pathologist Duties

Some responsibilities of school speech language pathologists include:

  • Treat children with communication, language, and swallowing issues
  • Ensure students’ needs are adequately met
  • Diagnostic evaluations
  • Providing services in either individual or group settings
  • Developing strategies with the students’ other education professionals and family members
  • Maintain documentation of the student’s progress
  • Play an essential role in Individual Education Plans.

Becoming a school SLP requires obtaining your bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and a master’s degree in audiology or speech language pathology, accredited by the CAA. Additionally, following your education, you must complete 400 hours of supervised clinical experience, and then a CFY or clinical fellowship year. After those are completed, you must take and pass the Praxis exam to gain an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology and a teaching certificate.

School Speech Language Pathologist Job Outlook & Salary

Speech Language Pathologist roles are projected to be on the rise over the next few years. As the awareness of speech and language disorders increases, SLPs can anticipate a greater demand for their services as well. Because SLPs play such a critical role in elevating speech, language, and social skills from a young age, we will likely continue to see these roles within school systems specifically.
